Prince Mohamed Aly never achieved his dream of producing a
black horse. Thanks to research
that has decoded the basic genetics of coat color, breeders
can produce black horses with more predictability.
Nakhda Balthazaar, 1995 stallion (DHAR Faa Halim x DW
Fadaakma) is a
fifth-generation black, tracing from Fa-Serr to Misimma to
Fabo to his sire DHAR Faa Halim.
His maternal grandsire, Fa Daalim, is a fourth-generation
black, also descending from Fa-Serr.
A Pedigree Analysis by Debra Kay Schrishuhn of Alara
Arabians.
Nakhda Balthazaar's sire line is Jamil El Kebir (JEK).
While the Jamil El Kebir sire line is not critically
endangered as some
SE sire lines, such as El Deree or Zobeyni. Coming
through the descendants of *Fadl, there is a healthy number
of JEK Sires in the world, although not nearly as numerous
as the Saklawi I line (through super sires such as Nazeer).
That said, the non-*Fadl brances of the JEK sire line are
less common, especially in the old bloodlines--coming
through
*Tuhotmos and Anter (EAO), for example.
Balthazaar comes through Fabo, a *Fadl grandson and sire of
34 sons, of which only three were Straight Babson.
The Fabo branch is treasured for the many beautiful
horses--and blacks--it has produced. DHAR Faa Halim
sired
94 registered foals, but was never replaced in the Heirloom
gene pool, although I believe he had some SOF offspring.
He was a quality horse and prepotent sire, so there is value
in continuing a successful branch that produces quality
horses.
Balthazaar is over 50% Babson and carries on the combination
of substance and refinement that his sire and grandsire
possessed. Additionally, his dam SAR Ladunimuhan is
only represented in the Arabian breed through her son
DHAR Faa Halim, even though she produced 6 foals (one
unregistered).
The bottom line is that the Jamil El Kebir sire line is
viable and not endangered as a whole, but specific branches,
Representing the declining diversity of the gene pool, are
quite rare. The Fabo branch is rare in Straight Babson
Egyptian
lines, unusual in Heirloom and somewhat uncommon in SOF
lines. In Straight Egyptian lines it is safe, for the
moment.
Here's where we need to think about the future. We say
this horse or that horse is not endangered, and that may be
true
for a generation or two or three--then, circumstances cause
the male get not to reproduce, or the heirs apparent of the
new generation die or are gelded for one reason or another
and suddenly, a sire line branch is almost gone.
Balthazaar represents the opportunity to spread the
influence of rare Babson and Heirloom lines in the general
Straight Egyptian
population and to keep alive the Fabo branch of the Jamil El
Kebir sire line through *Fadl in QUALITY and FUNCTIONAL
animals, to maintain herd quality and diversity. Also
consider that Balthazaar is only
four generations away from *Fadl--that is something pretty
special in and of itself.
